WHAT COUNTRIES DID OUR ANCESTORS COME FROM?

A question that I occasionally get is if I know what various countries our ancestors came from. The quick answer is that most of our ancestors came from Germany. That makes sense since many of our ancestors emigrated to Ohio from York County, Pennsylvania, which had a heavy concentration of Germans and “Pennsylvania Dutch.” (Many of our ancestors also came to Ohio from the Frederick, Maryland area.)

The term “Pennsylvania Dutch” refers to immigrants and their descendants from southwestern Germany and Switzerland, who settled in Pennsylvania in the 17th and 18th centuries. Historically, they spoke a dialect of German known as “Pennsylvania Dutch.” It is my understanding that Edward and Sarah Ruhl Snyder, the parents of Henry Albert Snyder, spoke “Pennsylvania Dutch.”

Based on what I know, and my information is admittedly incomplete, our ancestors are known to have emigrated from the following countries:

*Theobald Schneider (Snyder) (1728-?)-Germany

*Andreas Schwartz(1720-1789)-Germany

*Bartholomew Booher (1717-1791)-Germany

*Peter Ruhl (1694-1747)-Germany

*Anna Catharina Klapp (1710-1748)-Germany

*Johann Jacob Hoke (1695-1766)-Germany

*Anna Margaretha (1718-1785)-Germany

*Johannes Emig (1607-1787)-France

*Anna Dorthea Rotter (1689-1759)-France

*Valentine Krantz (1705-1755)-Germany

*Andrew Biddle (1735-1812)-Germany

*Daniel Cover (1723-1768)-Germany

*Sydney Wynne (1666-1692)-Wales

*John Conrad Kumpf (1685-1764)-Germany

*Anna Marie Fuerbach (1695-1758)-Germany

* Thomas Hughes (1612-1677)-England

*Catherine Renske (1632-1682)-Netherlands

*Johann Adam Lucas (1718-?)-Germany

*Anna Margaretha Erhardt(1700-1758)-Germany

*Alexis Lemmon (1746-1826)-Ireland

*Elizabeth Nuss (1741-1789)-Germany

*Johan Jacob Hetrick (1730-1789)-Germany

*Thomas M. Phillips (1770-1846)-Wales?

*Samuel Poland (1704-1780)-Germany

*Jemima Hederich (1730-1805)-Germany

*Catherine Fye (1768-1854)-Germany

While several of our ancestors came from France, it would appear that they actually came from the Alsace-Lorraine region, which changed hands between France and Germany over the years.

    Brad,
“PA Dutch” is the Americanized version of PA Deutsch. Deutsch in German means German. And a whole lot of their kinfolk migrated to Ohio.

I see Wales, Ireland, and Scotland! Maybe you will be near some of the exact towns of your trip.
